Mike wants to make a difference in the world around him
In Mike's workshop he is teaching a number of street youths to make art! They are using various materials, but mainly banana fibres, which is Mike's speciality craft. The art workshop is keeping the young people busy most of the day and keeping them off the streets - at the same time as teaching them a skill that they can use further on. The art is being sold in Denmark (Europe) and locally.
You are welcome to visit the workshop and the art shop on ololua road in Ngong, to see how you can help in making a difference in the world - one child at a time.
Lifters Rangers Skills Center
To train the needy youth of Ngong streets. To equip them with the necessary skills to make them self-reliant through art.
To minimize the crime and drug abuse among the youth around Ngong and to accelerate positive growth and development of the town.
To provide the street boys and girls with the necessary skills & emotional support.
To guard the natural environment, and to follow internationally accepted, best practices in all development projects.
Between 2014 and 2017 most of the boys in Lifters Rangers were students at Emmanuel Arts Skills Center. Here they learned to make art out of natural fibres, such as banana leaves and sisal and they also learned to make juwelry out of beads.
Today at Lifters Rengers Skills Center the boys are being taught how to make MAnila bags, which can be sold easily to the shops around town, since the Kenyan government banned all plastic bags from the shops, in 2017. Along with this they are also being taught how to make wooden crafts and toys, by a local artist, and they also continue to make bead juwelry. The students are also shown how to shop for materials, as well as conversing with costumers and selling their crafts to bigger companies - in order for them to make it on their own once they feel ready for it.
Other than the crafts, the boys are being mentored and supported in their everyday lifestyle, as many of them have had a hard youth up untill now - the volunteers give them life skills to better their own development, and they offer emotional support as well as guidance in all manners possible.
