The latest response I got from Amazon says, they are still ‘investigating' the subject…

The beard is back…

It seems Suchet once again has grown a beard… maybe it's for a new role or maybe he just wants a change in appearance like last time. Either way, I like it…

Anyway, that's not the story, the story is that Suchet was the second attraction on Saturday when he reopened Torre Abbey after its restoration

Read about the event here

PS - I got an e-mail from Amazon this morning, saying they would look into my question on the contents of the Poirot Collection 7 and get back to me within a week…

NB!

Apparently I was a bit too hasty when I wrote Appointment with Death is part of the 7th Collection DVD release. At least some doubts have occurred since Amazon still only mentions three episodes, on four discs, though. I've asked them, perhaps they can clear it up. I'll let you know as soon as they - hopefully - writeme back.

DVD release of Appointment with Death

Well, well, well… Appointment with Death seems to bea part of the DVD release Agatha Christie's Poirot – DVD Collection 7 on Amazon in UK October 6. It should hold all the latest four episodes of Poirot: Mrs. McGinty's Dead, Cat Among the Pigeons, Third Girl and of course Appointment with Death.

Could it mean that Appointment with Death follows the weekly schedule in UK and airs 5 October, after Third Girl has aired 28September? Right now my guess is yes…

DVD release 6 October - preorder it here

Suchet reopens Torre Abbey…

Excerpt

“Poirot star David to open restored abby

by Tina Crowson, Herald Express, September 11, 2008

Hercule poirot himself is to officially reopen historic Torre Abbey following its multi-million pound makeover.

David Suchet, star of stage and screen and best known as the incarnation of Agatha Christie's most loved Belgian detective, is patron of the Friends of Torre Abbey Renaissance Appeal.

He will be 'reopening' the abbey on Saturday with the key he used to lock the main door at the start of the first phase of its restoration as a major heritage tourist attraction and art gallery.

However, the visit will be a private one for invited guests only, which is bound to disappoint Agatha Christie fans who are preparing to celebrate her birthday on September 15 with the Agatha Christie Festival.

Most of the abbey was opened in July to give visitors a preview of the improvements which had been made to the building, while the finishing touches were put on the displays, galleries and exhibitions.

The galleries are now ready for opening.”

The upcoming Suchet episode of Who Do You Think You Are? will reveal the story of Suchet's Russian Jewish roots

“Suchet traces Russian Jewish roots

Poirot star David Suchet has solved his own family mystery.

The 62-year-old is one of several famous faces, including Patsy Kensit, Jerry Springer and Boris Johnson, to appear in the fifth series of the BBC's genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are?

The London-born actor always suspected he had Eastern European Jewish roots, but never had it confirmed by his family.

Suchet's father Jack, an atheist and eminent surgeon, emigrated from South Africa to England in the 1930s and never spoke about his family's past.

The star's maternal grandfather - a paparazzi photographer who took the first pictures of Edward and Mrs Simpson - sidestepped Suchet's attempts to know more about his heritage.

Suchet, best known for his TV role as Agatha Christie's fictional detective Hercule Poirot, has now finally confirmed that his ancestors fled anti-Semitism in Russia to live in France.

A clue to his family's history came in a book, People I Have Shot, by Suchet's Fleet Street photographer grandfather Jimmy. In the book, Jimmy referred to his father Arnold as "a professional photographer in France".

Suchet told the Radio Times: "Actually, he (and his wife Amelie) were born in Russia and had fled anti-Semitism and got on a train to France where they stayed for a decade."

The actor added: "My father didn't want to know about religion. I certainly couldn't speak to Jimmy about it. Whenever I suggested a Jewish background he'd say, 'I don't know anything about that.' I found that quite upsetting."

Suchet said: "Before doing this programme, I always felt there was something missing. Now the knowledge I have makes me what I am. I'm proud to have discovered those roots. But Jimmy never said a word about his parents and he would have known their story." ”

NB! The air date for Suchet's episode in Who Do You Think You Are? on BBC1 has been changed to 17 September.

Some details about the episode…

"Confusion reigns in David Suchet's family history. Was his father's father German, Russian or Estonian? Was his name Suchedowitz, Suchet or Shoket? David's mother's family is equally confusing. Was her grandfather really a French photographer? And why did another ancestor's ship sink off Norfolk? David travels across Europe hoping to find some answer.

Visit this page after the show on 17th September to watch and read David's story".

New UK DVD release… (haven't heard of any US release, sorry…)

Tales of the Unexpected - series 8, released 7 July 2008. This DVD completes the whole series and features the episode A Time to Die with David Suchet, aired in UK on ITV 6 May 1988.

A Time to Die tells the story of a married businessman (Suchet) with a pregnant mistress (Jemma Redgrave) who puts pressure on him to get a divorce. His wife (Nina van Pallandt) doesn't agree to that, and he sets up a deadly scenario to get rid of her. Due to an unexpected electric power failure in town his plan gets blown off.

Based on a story by Aileen Wheeler, dramatised by Robin Chapman and directed by Paul Annett.

Tales of the Unexpected was a British TV serial of short stories featuring tales of mystery, often with an unexpected ending. It ran from 1979-88 and 26 episodes were written by the famous screenplay and children's book writer Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).

The series is clearly old and seems a bit outdated in some episodes, but it still works with its twisted endings.I had forgotten all about Ron Grainer's characteristic theme music in the opening scenes with the cards, the fire, the smoking gun and the naked, dancing woman in black silhouette, and it was real fun - and nostalgic- to be reminded of it again. Also fun to watch is the Danish, blond, tall, cool and elegant Nina van Pallandt opposite Suchet's dark haired and not so tall character. Van Pallandt was a quite popular and successfull singer in the 60s before she started out acting in the 70s. She used to sing in a duo (Nina and Frederik) with her then husband baron Frederik van Pallandt, touring all over Europe.
