The world of blogging

16-11-2011
Thinking about bloggingI recently started blogging on another website on a weekly basis. It is a closed community, so not something that is open to the public, but it has been a very interesting experience so far. Fortunately, I am the blogger (I am one of 5) that is supposed to give the really different points of view in this quite traditional world of management. That gives me a bit of leeway, which is a good thing, because I have realised that I am inspired by the weirdest things...

I find myself blogging about my experiences when out driving my car, when answering questions from people and blogging a lot about some of the thoughts that keep surfacing from deep within. I do find the world of blogging a really strange one... After all, I sit in my office, by my computer (usually with a feline friend or three parked next to me) and write about MY world, MY thoughts without necessarily getting any input from anywhere. This is very strange to a coach who lives most of her life by asking other people questions and listening with complete attention and interest while they answer...

I treasure the times where people come up to me at a conference and tell me that they devour my articles (I write on communication for a Veterinary magazine every month), or when someone contacts me out of the blue and tells me how inspirational one of my blogs have been. But in a way blogging is a very self-indulgent thing that I fortunately can claim is business relevant, so I don't have to feel guilty about doing it! What can I say..... I guess I just like to ponder things. And to share with others what my conclusions are.

My main conclusions this week are that:
  • Having to blog forces me to write down what I think, which is good
  • Inspiration comes from the weirdest places! (Try Italian drivers, abusive men, coaching clients, strange questions)
  • Knowing my audience (which I do for the weekly blog) actually makes blogging much harder, because there are things I don't write (yet - they need to get used to me first ;-)), whereas on this website, I literally write whatever comes into my head
  • At the end of the day, all blogging needs to be true to the author. If I am not authentic in my life, my work and what I write - what is the point?

So here is my deal with anyone who reads this:

  • Don't worry if you don't agree - that is perfectly OK
  • Feel free to leave a comment - or not if you don't want to
  • Get in touch if something is bugging you - maybe you will end up the subject of my next blog.
