23rd of June: Plain of Jars - Phonsavan

From Luang Prabang we went to Phonsavan - A very very tough trip! Except from the last 50km the rest of the drive went through the most amazing mountain areas which unfortunately meant A LOT of little turns every few seconds. It was unbelivably beautiful driving on the edge of a the mountain with a clear view of valleys and mountains.......

21st of June: Big Brother Mouse Shop - Luang Prabang

This beautiful day in Luang Prabang started with an amazing breakfast in JoMa a French inspired bakery that serves any baking goods you can imagine. Afterwards I went on a walk on my own - every now and again a little peace and quite is nice when constantly being surrounded by people (and I am sure my family needed a break from me too - some people claim that I talk 24/7 which isn't entirely true as I do occationally sleep....) and so a walk around Luang Prabang gave me a little alone time. I found the town being oddly quiet but I guess that is to be expected during low season :)

Later on I met up with the others again for lunch by the Mekong River and while Arne and Louise went home Sebastian, my mum and I went to visit the Big Brother Mouse shop. The Big Brother Mouse shop is a book shop run on a volunteering basis that aim to teach English to kids in Laos by giving out books donated by visitors to kids in different villages around the country. As well as distributing book they also provide English classes for young people in Luang Prabang and this is also run on a volunteer basis where English speaking people are encouraged to come and read with the young people to help their pronounciation and to extend their vocabulary. They run the English classes twice a day (9am-11am and 5pm-7pm) and so I went back to the shop at 5pm to help out.

It was a great experience and I met many lovely young people whom I helped read the Vientiane Times and worked on their vocabulary with flashcards made by the locals.

It was a good mixture of local secondary school kids and first year college students from all over Laos and half way through the class we were joined by 2 monks! All in all a very positive experiences and if you one day travel through or to Luang Prabang then you should definitely drop by the shop and give a helping hand - they really appreciate it and it is great fun meeting young people that can tell you all about their culture and traditions.

After 2 hours of teachin English I met up with the others again and before heading back to our hotel we went to the local night market - it is incredible how different they all are even though it might sound very mucy like the same kind of thing over and over again!!

Now we have just finished playing cards and are ready for bed - I'll be back soon with more stories

Bye for now

20th of June: Slowboat trip to Laos - Luang Prabang

Today we arrived in Luang Prabang after a beautiful (but very long) 2 day slowboat trip from Huay Xai. Yesterday morning we had a very early start with breakfast at 6am after which a car picked us up and brough us to Chiang Khong where we crossed the river in a tiny speed boat. The boat was absolutely full of people - a bit of a surprise as we all thought low season meant only few tourists!!

On the other side of the river it was time for our second "on-arrival-visa" experience which was quite confusing as there were so many people and our guide didn't really speak much English. With only one pen we slowly worked our way through large amounts of paper work for all 5 of us and after approximately 1 hour we were finally through passport control on the Laos side and had met our second guide of the day who was to take us to the slowboat.

If I'm to say it myself I find that we are usually well prepared for everything but as we were only told 1 hour before the slowboat left that there was no food available on the 7 hour long boat trip we faced slight problems as Sebastian and Louise usually are hungry several times during a day. The problem was however solved by stocking up on Oreos, Mentos, water, Coca cola, crisps and sandwiches and we survived the many hours without any hunger at all :)

The left the pier at 11.30am but unfortunately we didn't get seats next to each other and so the birthday boy (Arne) had to sit by himself in the front of the boat - this did however turn out to be a much better seat than any of the rest of us got as we sat 5 meters from the motor which was rather noisy and it was pretty crowded down the back end of the boat! The scenery 100% made up for all the hassle - the nature along the Mekong River is gorgeous, absolutely stunning!!

After 6½ hours we arrived in Pak Beng where we stayed in a nice little hotel that had a resturant overlooking the Mekong River - so beautiful to watch the sun go down while having a birthday dinner for Arne.

This morning we continued the boat trip at 9.30am! To get better seats we had decided to get up a bit early and head to the pier 40 minutes before departure - everyone else sadly had the same idea so when we arrived there were only few seats left but we got 5 seats next to each other and all was grand!
Yesterday the boat was pretty full but today was even crazier as they had put in extra seats, leaving most of us with 10cm leg room - Arne, Lone and Sebastian got isle seats so they could stretch their legs while Louise and I werer the "young", flexible ones with out legs up near our ears... so it was a relatively long trip today but everyone was having a laugh about the limited space and we swopped seats every few hours so everyone survived :)

After arriving in Luang Prabang at 6pm we quickly found  restaurant where we had a lovely dinner before heading back to our hotel for an early night - It is amazing how tired you can get from sitting still on a boat for so many hours....

Hope you are all well! Sweet dreams
