Heroes & Scouts

Hero - Recruit only heroes who have a score of 60+ in at least one stat: POL, INT, or ATT.  Ideally in the beginning you want to find a hero with high Politics (POL) to help you build structures faster and gather resources faster.
The level of the hero is irrelevant. A level 15 hero with a highest stat of 45 is worth less than a level 2 hero with a 62 in one stat.
In fact you pay for heroes based on their level so a low level hero with high stats is preferred. A level 2 hero costs 40 gold an hour. A level 15 hero would cost 300 gold an hour.

USING Anabasis · Epitome of Military Science · On War
Open your Feast Hall, open a hero's stats, click the green/white plus sign next to the hero's experience.

Ad the stuff you want - voila! Your hero got more experience.

Reduce loss
Keep a very high attack hero to defend your city and keep a room vacant in all  FH.
If the enemy sends a high attack hero then he will be captured if there’s a room in your FH.

Attacking a level 10  Y
To minumise your loss hero at least 122 attack.
OR
- some acctually, till top hero reaches 140+ attack, cause with 122+ heroes I always lose the entire main wave (about 80-90k arch + others), of which up to 50% can be recovered from the medic camp depending on your honor level. You should also scout till you get a defending hero that's less than level 10 (the last hero you scouted will be the one defending when you attack).

With 160+ attack hero (87500 archer, 3500 worker, 3500 warrior, 3500 scout, 2000 transport), my archer losses is typically less than 10k. No transport is lost. All the workers, warriors, scouts may die, but we don't care about them because they're fast to make. :) If the L10 has not been raided recently, you'll carry back 19m food.

IMPORTANT: of course this assumes that your research tech levels have been maxed out.

Upgrade the heros attribute of attack on return before despatching again.

Intelligence gives a boost to defence - up to a maximum of 50% damage reduction.

Here's the most basic of my calculators with Intelligence formula added (a percentage increase on base defence):-

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Ans3NhaMDLGkdEZvbVp6WXFmMHVBU3NMSjVZdmNEe lE&hl=en_GB

When you start on a new server, the hero to look for would be one with both Attack and Intelligence in the high 60s. It's not really practical to increase both stats, but that high starting intelligence will pay dividends when the hero is ready to start hitting level 10s.
Also if you're sending enough troops to one-shot the enemy then sending your most intelligent hero would be the smart thing to do.
Here's an example of what the buff items will do; the Corselet increases an archer's base defence by 20%, applying the Art of War on a hero with 60 Intelligence would increase base defence by 15%.

Chart below, compiled by Neokarasu, shows how much Intelligence is needed to gain the maximum 50% damage reduction (Iron Working level 10 assumed).

Worker (D = 10)::: Int = 850*
Warrior (D = 50):: Int = 850
Scout ( D = 20)::: Int = 850*
Pikes (D = 150)::: Int = 184
Swords (D = 250):: Int = 50
Archers (D = 50):: Int = 850
Cavs (D = 180):::: Int = 128
Phracts (D = 350): Int = 0 (it's actually a negative number so Phracts are already "defense capped" after IW10 - or IW9 to be exact - so that's why they're one tough mofo)
Bal (D = 160)::::: Int = 163
Pult (D = 200):::: Int = 100
Ram (D = 160)::::: Int = 163

*Scouts and Workers have a defence of 50 despite what tool-tip says.

Additional: Just before posting, I thought I'd best do a search to see if this was already known and I found an ancient post from way back in April. Seems they were pretty wise in those days, I bet they didn't believe in flying horses

SCOUT BOMB
The scout bomb is an effective way to weaken a high level opponent’s defenses.  Scout bombs can destroy all the traps, and devestate the archers defending a city.

Scout bombs are very effective technique to kill the archers. One way to reduce the archer loss is to keep a very high attack hero to defend your city and keep a room vacant in the FH. As scouts are surely going to die, most players do not send very high attack hero with them. So your high attack hero will kill most of the scouts without much loss. And if the enemy sends a high attack hero then he will be captured if there’s a room in your FH.

...........................

There's a simple workaround for this, which you can use when attacking others. Set your "throwaway" hero to land 1 sec before your good hero. Let's say you have 3 heroes which won't mind losing, plus 3 more you've spent months levelling up so that they are now 140+ attack points. Send the 3 disposable heroes to attack with 1 scout each, to arrive 1 or 2 sec before the good ones, each with 100k scouts. This way, if there are vacant spots in the target's feasting hall, the throwaway heroes will fill them up, so that your good heroes don't get captured.

Of course if the target feasting hall has more than 3 vacancies (unlikely), your good hero might still get captured. Is there a chance that there might be a vacancy, but a defeated still doesn't get captured? If capture doesn't happen 100% of the time a hero is defeated, there is a possibility the disposable hero is not captured but the good hero is captured. I don't know the answer to this, so I always send 3 disposable heroes ahead of the good ones, and I'll never risk the top hero from any city, but I will risk the 2nd ranking one.
