BreedingIn 1962 the first attempts to preserve the breed were made. Alongside with Jón Í Bö, Leivur Trónd and his wife Begga started searching for the remainders of the Faroese ponies. They managed to track down four mares and one stallion.

HistoryThe Faroese pony is one of the purest and oldest breeds in the world. It originates from the same family as the Exmore and Dartmoore horses. The pony looks like the horses that came to Europe around 200 a.d.
It is most likely that the first settlers of Nordic and Celtic origin brought the breed with them to the Islands. The breed has been living free in the mountains and was only brought down to the villages when they were needed for various heavy work. They have adapted themselves perfectly to the harsh circumstances in the Faroe Islands and can easily survive on the limited food resources available in the nature.
