Mjölnir is the hammer of Thor according to Norse mythology. It was forged by two dwarves – Sindri forged, while Brokk kept the bellows going.
Mjölnir is the mightiest weapon in Asgard. The hammer always hits its mark. It hits with a tremendous force and always returns to the hand that threw it. In order to enable Thor to catch it, he had to have a strong glove (Iarngreiper) made. Even though the hammer is a powerful weapon, it does not take up a lot of space. It has the ability to change size and fit into the smallest pocket should it become necessary.
Mjölnir is Thor’s dearest possession. When he swings it, it makes a loud crash, lightning strikes and sparks fly around him – according to Norse mythology, Mjölnir is the cause of thunder and lightning.
Mjölnir was forged during a bet between Loki and the dwarves.
Thor has lost Mjölnir a single time, when it was stolen by the Jotun Trym. Thor had to dress up like Freya and journey as a woman to trick the Jotun into giving it back. The story is called “Thor’s Wedding Day”.
