Bioprotein is a single cell protein based on growing bacteria in a fermentation process where the raw materials are mainly oxygen, methane and ammonia. The technology has been developed since the 1960's.
Approval
Bioproteins were approved as animal nutrition by the EU on 10 July 1995 according to Commission Directive 95/33/EC. They were further approved as compound feed ingredients by Commission Regulation (EC) No 575/2011 of 16 June 2011 allowing for trade within the European Union.
