Language & Curency

Language
The vast majority of the 10.7m population of Greece speaks Greek (Modern Greek or Dimotiki), which is the country’s official language. The Greek language has a variety of local dialects, and there are a few minority languages also used in certain parts of the country. None of these minority languages has official status.

Currency
The official currency of Greece is the Euro. The euro banknotes and coins were introduced in Greece on 1 January 2002, after a transitional period of one year when the euro was the official currency but only existed as ‘book money’. The dual circulation period – when both the Greek drachma and the euro had legal tender status – ended on 28 February 2002.
